I am sharing this letter from Senator Diane Feinstein to me, to show that one person can make a difference when they speak up and share their concerns. What are you concerned about that you want to speak up about? I encourage you to speak up for the change you wish to see. Now is the time.
Dear Ms. Carrera:
Thank you for writing to me about pollinator conservation. I appreciate the time you took to write, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.
Like you, I am deeply concerned by the decline in pollinator populations worldwide because of climate change, habitat loss, and pesticide use. Pollinators like commercial honeybees, wild bees, and butterflies play an important role in natural ecosystems and agriculture, including an array of crops important to California’s farmers.
I share your belief that the federal government should do more to address declining pollinator populations, including the monarch butterfly. That is why I cosponsored the “MONARCH Act” (S. 809), which Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced on March 23, 2021. S. 809 would provide $125 million over five years to support research, conservation efforts, and habitat restoration and creation for the western monarch butterfly. This bill would fund crucial conservation efforts like restoring the species’ overwintering habitat, a majority of which is in California. The “MONARCH Act” is currently awaiting consideration by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, of which I am not a member.
Pollinators are an important part of the ecosystem, and we must work to help restore their populations. I will be sure to keep your thoughts on protecting pollinator populations in mind should the “MONARCH Act” or related legislation come before the Senate for a vote.
